Intercultural relationships – dealing with cultural barriers
When I was 18 years old I used to believe there is no way one could ever date successfully a person from a different culture. Now the reality is as the world is becoming increasingly borderless intercultural, inter-racial couples are on the way of becoming the norm and that is in my opinion a great thing. I think we should never segregate ourselves based on race, religion, nationality, culture nor any media, family or peer influenced limitations other than choosing the person that genuinely makes us happy.

Have you ever felt like your world view has expanded after living abroad or in a new environment? Studying or living abroad exposes you to a new language, a new style of living, new ways of thinking. The study included three experiments that demonstrated how intercultural relationships enhances creative thinking. The first study is a longitudinal study that followed MBA students in a cross-cultural relationship for 10 months.
Their creativity levels were measured through diverse perspectives and compared before and after the program. After all, how do we characterize foreign culture anyways? Every relationship could be viewed as intercultural in a sense that romantic partners often grew up in different backgrounds and had different life experiences. Intercultural Relationships: Can They Work?
All relationships are to some extent cross-cultural, in that both parties come together from different families to build a new unit together. Whilst for many couples this will be a natural set of compromises to which both partners will adjust naturally overtime — for others the differences can be fundamental, with one finding it difficult to understand the others way of looking at the world and vice versa.
In a relationship situation when two people have differing beliefs, it is these feelings that can be pushed to the forefront, overwhelming the individual feelings we have for one another. Cross-cultural issues faced by couples include loss of identity, conflicts over differences in fundamental beliefs, clashes in parenting tactics, struggles with unsupportive families and different interpretations of an event relating to some aspect of differing cultures.
Counselling for cross-cultural issues can help couples step outside of their restrictive cultural identities to see one another with greater clarity, as individuals.
