By Jason Pratt – August 31, Part 1 — The Data, The Problem, and The Thesis My friend Victor Reppert, over at Dangerous Idea , has been recently engaged in a series of posts on historical analysis of the accuracy of the New Testament; and the thorny topic of Theudas came up again a week or two ago, this time in context of Richard I. I am a bit handicapped here in analyzing Dr. Hopefully some of our readers will have one or both books at hand, and can provide further information relevant to my critique, in fairness to Dr.
I want to stress that this is also a strong caution to our readers that, for all I know at the moment, Dr. Dating Acts has been out for a few years. A search for Josephus in the same text turns up numerous entries, including Dr. P on this topic, in the comments. The basic textual facts for the problem, and for Dr. Now it came to pass, while Fadus was procurator of Judea, that a certain magician, whose name was Theudas, persuaded a great part of the people to take their effects with them, and follow him to the river Jordan; for he told them he was a prophet, and that he would, by his own command, divide the river, and afford them an easy passage over it; and many were deluded by his words.
However, Fadus did not permit them to make any advantage of his wild attempt, but sent a troop of horsemen out against them; who, falling upon them unexpectedly, slew many of them, and took many of them alive. They also took Theudas alive, and cut off his head, and carried it to Jerusalem. This was what befell the Jews in the time of Cuspius Fadus’s government. Then came Tiberius Alexander as successor to Fadus; he was the son of Alexander the alabarch of Alexandria, which Alexander was a principal person among all his contemporaries, both for his family and wealth: he was also more eminent for his piety than this his son Alexander, for he did not continue in the religion of his country.

Academic journal article Anglican Theological Review. Dating Acts: Between the Evangelists and the Apologists. By Richard I. Santa Rosa, Calif: Polebridge Press, Most commentaries on the Acts of the Apostles locate its authorship between 80 and ce, yet few offer more than a handful of paragraphs to explain why. For Richard Pervo this apparent yet imprecise consensus “represents more of a political compromise than a hypothesis established by rigorously examined and argued criteria” p.
Through rigorous examination Pervo contends that CE is a more likely date. His purpose extends beyond reconfiguring timelines of the New Testament writings, for he insists that attention to the date of Acts must be integral to any inteq3retation of Acts and essential to any understanding of the book’s place within the history of early Christianity.
The heart of the thesis concerns Luke’s use of sources. After establishing that the author of Acts used neither the Septuagint nor Mark in uniform ways, Pervo offers two lengthy chapters maintaining that Luke drew from the Pauline corpus and works of Josephus. Pervo does not reproduce forms of source criticism familiar to synoptic studies. Because Luke followed ancient conventions of freely altering and masking reliance on other texts, Pervo must adduce subtle yet sophisticated intertextual analyses to demonstrate connections between Luke’s writings and source material mined from Paul and Josephus.
